“The junta cannot rescue Myanmar from a disaster it has created over decades,” a local activist stated, encapsulating the despair felt by many as the country grapples with the aftermath of a military coup and a recent devastating earthquake.

Since the military seized power in February 2021, Myanmar has descended into chaos, with approximately 93,000 people killed and 3.6 million displaced according to reports from Acled and the UN. Civilians are exhausted by war, but they have not given up on democracy, highlighting the resilience of the population amid ongoing strife.

The recent magnitude 7.7 earthquake, which struck near Mandalay in the Sagaing region, has further complicated the humanitarian landscape, resulting in the loss of more than 5,000 lives. The disaster has prompted a significant response from international communities, including a remarkable £2.4 million raised in Scotland for the Myanmar Earthquake Appeal.

Huw Owen, a representative of the DEC charities, remarked, “With so many humanitarian disasters affecting the world right now, it is really heartening to see the Scottish public responding so generously once again to this appeal.” This support has been crucial, as more than half a million people have benefited from aid provided by DEC charities.

In addition to the funds raised, the Scottish Government has contributed £250,000 from its Humanitarian Emergency Fund, ensuring that essential supplies and temporary shelter are provided to those in need. Over 159,900 people have received cash and vouchers for essentials, while 47,600 have been provided with temporary shelter.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the military’s recent display of a BTR-4 armored personnel carrier, which raises questions about whether these units were produced before the suspension of cooperation with Ukraine or are newly built. The exact impact of sanctions on the military’s actions in Myanmar also remains unclear.
