Major Changes Following Season 15
The 15th season of Call the Midwife has concluded, marked by the poignant death of Sister Monica Joan and the closure of Nonnatus House’s maternity ward. This season featured eight episodes, showcasing significant character developments and emotional farewells, as noted by creator Heidi Thomas, who remarked, “I shed more tears during the making of that episode [the finale] than any other.”
Looking ahead, a prequel series and a movie are currently in development. The prequel will explore the backstories of younger versions of Sister Julienne, Sister Evangelina, and Sister Monica Joan, along with three new midwives. Meanwhile, the movie is set to take place overseas in 1972 and will include members of the current cast, featuring three new medical missions.
Future of the Series
Season 16 of Call the Midwife has been confirmed but is not expected to arrive until Christmas 2028. Notably, there will not be a traditional Christmas special in 2027, as Thomas stated, “There won’t be a Christmas special next Christmas, not in the traditional mould.” However, Helen George reassured fans, saying, “It is just a pause because we know it’s coming back.”
In the wake of the maternity unit’s closure, Sister Julienne announced that Nonnatus House will transition into a house of prayer and charity. Additionally, Trixie has joined The Lady Emily Clinic in Mayfair, while Joyce will be working at St Cuthbert’s. Dr. Patrick Turner will continue to run his GP practice with Nurse Crane serving as his district nurse.
As fans await the next chapter, all 15 seasons of Call the Midwife are currently available on BBC iPlayer. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact release date for Season 16 and further specifics about the prequel series and movie. Observers are eager to see how these developments will unfold in the coming years.
