Fire Near Glasgow Central Station
“I am deeply concerned about the fire near Glasgow Central Station tonight and very grateful to all of the emergency services who are responding,” stated John Swinney, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
A fire broke out at approximately 3:46 PM on March 8, 2026, originating from a vape shop located on Union Street. The incident has caused significant disruptions to rail services, with dozens of trains cancelled and the station remaining closed until further notice.
More than 60 firefighters, supported by 15 fire appliances and 3 high-reach vehicles, were mobilised to tackle the blaze. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that there are no reported casualties, and crews remain at the scene to manage the situation.
Paul Sweeney, a local representative, remarked, “Sadly the building has now partially collapsed. I hope the fire can be contained.” The Forsyth Building, which dates back to 1851 and was formerly a department store, has been repurposed into a mix of office and retail space.
Passengers are strongly advised to avoid the area and follow travel guidance provided by rail services. Avanti West Coast has announced that some ticket acceptance is in place for affected passengers.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the cause of the fire, which is currently under investigation. Emergency crews are expected to continue their efforts for several hours as they work to bring the situation under control.
As the situation develops, further updates will be provided by local authorities and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.
