The UK is preparing an aircraft carrier for possible deployment to the Middle East amid deepening conflict with Iran. The HMS Prince of Wales, one of the Royal Navy’s largest and most advanced warships, is being readied for this potential mission.
In a significant development, the notice period for HMS Prince of Wales to set sail has been reduced from two weeks to just five days. This change reflects the urgency of the situation and the UK’s commitment to bolster its military presence in the region.
Current Status
HMS Prince of Wales serves as the fleet’s flagship and is a central element of the UK’s carrier strike capability. The vessel displaces around 65,000 tonnes and can carry a core crew of roughly 700 personnel. When fully operational, it can accommodate up to 1,600 personnel, including a powerful air group centered on the F-35B Lightning II stealth fighter.
The carrier can operate at speeds of about 25 knots and has the capacity for up to 36 jets alongside helicopters for various missions. Its flight deck supports large helicopters, including Chinooks and Apaches, enhancing its operational versatility.

The Ministry of Defence has stated, “HMS Prince of Wales has always been on very high readiness and we are increasing the preparedness of the carrier, reducing the time it would take to set sail for any deployment.” This statement underscores the heightened state of alert as tensions rise.
Additionally, the Prime Minister remarked, “We’re continuing our defensive operations, and I’ve just spoken with the President of Cyprus to let him know that we are sending helicopters with counter-drone capabilities and HMS Dragon is to be deployed to the region.” HMS Dragon, a Type 45 destroyer, is noted for being the only vessel in the British arsenal capable of shooting down ballistic missiles.
