Instagram Outage Affects Thousands
Instagram is currently experiencing a global outage that began on March 10, 2026, affecting thousands of users across the United States. Reports indicate that more than 10,000 users have encountered issues with the app, with significant disruptions noted in major cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington, and New York.
The disruption started at approximately 7:40 a.m. IST on March 11, with 71% of complaints related to difficulties accessing Instagram. Additionally, 20% of users reported server connection problems, while 5% experienced issues with their Instagram feed or timeline not loading properly.
As of 10:03 PM EST on March 10, over 6,000 users had reported problems on Downdetector, a platform that tracks service outages. Among these complaints, 68% involved app disruptions, 19% were related to server connection issues, and 7% pertained to posting troubles. Notably, Instagram’s messaging system became completely non-functional during the outage, prompting users to seek alternatives like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to continue their conversations.
Users have taken to social media to express their frustrations, with one user stating, “Is Instagram down? I can’t reply to my friend,” while another exclaimed, “Instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN.” Others questioned the status of direct messages, asking, “Are Instagram DMs down or… am I cooked?”
In response to the ongoing issues, Instagram Communications acknowledged the situation, stating, “We are aware some of you might be experiencing issues with IG at the moment. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.” However, details regarding the cause of the disruption remain unconfirmed, and it is unclear when services will be fully restored.
This outage highlights the need for Instagram users to have confidence in Meta’s ability to improve infrastructure resilience and the reliability of direct messaging services. As the situation develops, users are left waiting for updates and a resolution to the ongoing issues.
