Jane Fallon Diagnosed with Breast Cancer
Jane Fallon, the acclaimed novelist, has been diagnosed with breast cancer. The diagnosis came after a routine mammogram conducted late last year, which detected the cancer at a very early stage despite the absence of any symptoms.
The 65-year-old author, known for her best-selling novels including ‘Getting Rid Of Matthew’ and ‘Faking Friends’, expressed her relief that the prognosis is excellent. “About a month ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer – very early stage thankfully & the prognosis is excellent,” Fallon stated.
Fallon revealed that she had no symptoms prior to the diagnosis, but a skilled radiographer identified something unusual during the mammogram, prompting further tests and a biopsy. She noted, “I had no symptoms but the brilliant radiographer spotted something iffy & sent me for further tests & eventually a biopsy.” This early detection is crucial, as mammograms can help identify breast cancer that is too small to feel or see.
She is scheduled to undergo surgery in the week following her announcement, and she conveyed a sense of urgency to proceed with the treatment. “It’s been a lot, I’m not going to lie. But, my surgery is scheduled for the week after next and I just want to get it over with now,” she remarked.
Fallon has been in a long-term relationship with comedian Ricky Gervais for over 44 years, having met while studying at University College London in the early 1980s. Gervais has been supportive during this challenging time.
In addition to her literary career, Fallon has a notable social media presence, with 35.4k followers on Instagram, where she shares updates about her life and work. She mentioned that she is receiving “incredible care” during her treatment, which has provided her with some comfort.
As she prepares for surgery, Fallon is focusing on her recovery and has limited her activities to audiobooks and jigsaws. Her debut novel is also being adapted for film, showcasing her continued success in the literary world.
While the prognosis appears positive, the situation remains fluid as she navigates her treatment journey. Further updates on her health and recovery are anticipated in the coming weeks.
