The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced a recall of Kendamil brand infant formula sold online and at Costco. The recall affects one-kilogram containers labeled “with whole milk” due to potential contamination with cereulide toxin, which can lead to food poisoning.
Why It Matters
Cereulide is a toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus and is known for its heat stability, meaning it can survive cooking temperatures that typically kill bacteria. Symptoms of cereulide ingestion can manifest rapidly, often resulting in nausea and vomiting. Although no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall, the CFIA has advised consumers against using, selling, or distributing the affected products.
What’s Next
Kendal Nutricare, the European-based company behind the Kendamil brand, indicated that the contamination may be linked to a recent supply disruption involving arachidonic acid oil, a source of Omega 6. The affected batches were produced in May 2025 and include lot numbers 897274 and 888632. Consumers are urged to check their products and adhere to the CFIA’s recommendations.
