Catalans Dragons Secure Victory
“That was the response we were all hoping for,” said Joel Tomkins, head coach of Catalans Dragons, following his team’s 22-16 victory over Leigh Leopards at Leigh Sports Village.
The match marked a significant turnaround for the Dragons, who had previously suffered a heavy defeat against St Helens. Tomkins noted, “It was probably better than I expected, if I am honest,” highlighting the team’s resilience in bouncing back.
Leigh Leopards opened the scoring with a try from Tesi Niu, taking an early lead. However, the score was tied at 6-6 at halftime, setting the stage for a competitive second half.
In the second half, Catalans Dragons took control with tries from Charlie Staines and Lewis Dodd, establishing a 10-point lead. Leigh Leopards responded with tries from Innes Senior and Tesi Niu, but ultimately fell short.
Toby Sexton’s contributions were pivotal, as he successfully converted three tries and added two penalties for the Dragons. His performance was instrumental in securing the victory.
Tomkins praised his team’s defensive efforts, stating, “If somebody missed a tackle, there was somebody else turning up.” He emphasized the importance of teamwork, noting, “Even when Leigh scored, in every picture we had people chasing back.”
Despite the loss, Leigh Leopards have shown potential, having reached the play-off semi-finals last year. However, they now find themselves with only one win from their first four games of the season.
The match took place during the 2026 Super League season, and the Dragons’ victory serves as a crucial boost as they aim to improve their standings.
As the season progresses, both teams will be looking to build on their performances, with Catalans Dragons hoping to maintain their momentum and Leigh Leopards seeking to turn their fortunes around.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the next matchups for both teams, but the outcome of this clash has set the stage for an exciting season ahead.
