The numbers
Mr Benn, the beloved character who first graced the pages of children’s literature in 1967, is set to be adapted into a live-action film by director Kirk Jones. This project aims to introduce Mr Benn to a new generation, with filming expected to commence in early 2027.
Created by author David McKee, Mr Benn originally appeared in a series of four books: Red Knight, Gladiator, Pirate, and Zoo Keeper. The character’s charm and moral lessons captured the hearts of many children, leading to the adaptation of an animated series that aired on the BBC from 1971 to 1972, comprising just 13 episodes. The stories often featured Mr Benn traveling through time and space, visiting various worlds to solve significant problems with kindness and common sense.
Kirk Jones, known for directing films such as Nanny McPhee and Waking Ned Devine, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, “I adored Mr Benn as a child and immediately saw the importance of introducing him to a new generation, in a live action adventure.” He further elaborated on the character’s unique ability to navigate different realms, saying, “Mr Benn finds a unique way to travel through time and space, visiting historical and futuristic worlds to solve apparently monumental problems, with kindness, compassion and common sense.”
The McKee family, who have been closely involved with the legacy of Mr Benn, also shared their excitement about the film adaptation. They noted, “The Mr Benn film project has been close to our hearts for many years; it was something our father would often talk about and was keen to see it happen.” This sentiment underscores the deep connection the family has with the character and the stories that have resonated with audiences for decades.
In addition to the original four books, David McKee published a fifth Mr Benn book in 2001, further expanding the character’s universe. Sadly, McKee passed away in 2022, leaving behind a rich legacy that this film adaptation seeks to honor. The stories of Mr Benn are not just entertaining; they are imbued with moral lessons that have made them timeless.
As the film gears up for production, observers are eager to see how the classic tales will be reimagined for modern audiences. Kirk Jones hinted at the potential for grand adventures, stating, “If all goes to plan, Mr Benn might even save the world.” This ambitious vision for the film suggests that it will not only pay homage to the original stories but also expand upon them in exciting new ways.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the casting and specific plot elements of the film, but the anticipation surrounding Mr Benn’s return to the screen is palpable. As fans of the original series and newcomers alike await further announcements, the legacy of Mr Benn continues to inspire and captivate, promising a delightful journey ahead for audiences of all ages.
