What Happened

A new footpath is set to be constructed along the road from RAF Cosford to Cosford railway station, following Shropshire Council’s successful acquisition of £350,000 from Active Travel England. This initiative aims to provide a safe walking route for the thousands of visitors attending events such as the Cosford Air Show, where currently, pedestrians have no safe refuge along the road.

Why It Matters

The construction of the footpath is crucial for enhancing safety and accessibility for both residents and visitors. Rob Wilson, Shropshire Council’s Cabinet member for transport and economic growth, emphasized that this project has been a long-awaited solution to a missing link in local infrastructure. With RAF Cosford attracting nearly half a million visitors annually, the new footpath will help alleviate traffic pressure on local roads and improve the overall experience for those traveling to the RAF museum.

What’s Next

Construction is planned to commence at the end of June 2026, with completion expected in time for the school summer holidays in July 2026. During the construction phase, the speed limit on the road will be reduced to 30mph to ensure the safety of the workforce, a measure that will remain in place post-construction. Additionally, discussions are ongoing with West Midlands Rail Executive to support the anticipated increase in pedestrian traffic to RAF Cosford.
