Nicky Henderson’s Triumph at the 2026 Cheltenham Festival
The 2026 Cheltenham Festival commenced on March 10, 2026, with an expected attendance of about a quarter of a million people. This prestigious event is known for its significance in the horse racing calendar, particularly the opening race, the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle.
In a thrilling start to the festival, Nicky Henderson’s horse, Old Park Star, emerged victorious in the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, marking Henderson’s sixth win in this race. Ridden by Nico de Boinville, Old Park Star was the 15-8 market leader and won by a length and a half over Sober Glory, with Mydaddypaddy finishing third, just a nose behind.
Nicky Henderson expressed his optimism for Old Park Star’s future, especially following the retirement of his previous champion, Constitution Hill. He remarked, “This is a race that’s been kind to us over the years,” highlighting his long-standing association with the Cheltenham Festival, which dates back to 1986.
The Supreme Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade One race covering a distance of 2 miles and 87 yards, and the top four finishers in this year’s race were all trained in Britain, showcasing the strength of British horse racing.
Joint-trainer Johnson White of Sober Glory expressed disappointment at finishing second, stating, “I couldn’t be more delighted with the run, obviously very disappointed to finish second.” Meanwhile, Dan Skelton, trainer of Mydaddypaddy, praised his horse’s performance, saying, “It was an almighty run from a five-year-old, I couldn’t be prouder of the horse.”
The atmosphere at the Cheltenham Festival is electric, with fans and trainers alike eager to see how the events unfold over the four days of racing. Henderson’s latest win adds to his impressive legacy in the sport and sets the stage for future competitions.
As the festival progresses, all eyes will be on Henderson and his stable of talented horses, including Old Park Star, who may be poised to become the next star in the racing world.
