Rory McIlroy Withdraws from Arnold Palmer Invitational
Rory McIlroy has withdrawn from the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando due to lower back spasms, a decision that comes just as he was set to begin his third round. This unexpected development raises concerns about his health and performance in the upcoming tournaments.
While warming up in the gym, McIlroy felt a small twinge in his back. He stated, “Unfortunately, I’m not able to continue and have to withdraw.” Prior to his withdrawal, McIlroy had shot a round of 68 and was four under par, but he was still nine shots back from the leader.
This marks only the second time in McIlroy’s PGA Tour career that he has withdrawn from an event, highlighting the seriousness of his condition. The five-time major winner has competed in three PGA Tour events this season, and his recent performance had shown promise.
Looking ahead, McIlroy is scheduled to defend his title at the Players Championship next week, followed by his participation in the Masters from April 9-12. Last year, he became the sixth man to complete a career Grand Slam at the Masters, making his upcoming participation even more significant.
McIlroy expressed his disappointment, saying, “I was excited to compete this weekend.” He also extended his best wishes to the tournament, stating, “I wish the Arnold Palmer Invitational a great finish and look forward to being back next year.”
As McIlroy navigates this injury, the impact on his upcoming events remains uncertain. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the extent of his back issue and whether he will be fit to compete in the Players Championship or the Masters.
