12 Freebies and Discounts for State Pensioners Coming in March – Full List

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has unveiled a range of discounts, perks, and benefits available to retirees who qualify for the state pension.

12 state pension freebies and discounts set to roll out in March have been announced, potentially saving pensioners THOUSANDS. Eligibility for the state pension opens the door to various financial aids and benefits.

Understanding the State Pension

The state pension is a regular payment provided by the government once you reach the state pension age, which is currently set at 66 for both men and women. The full state pension amount is £230.25 per week. Below, we explore the various benefits and discounts available to pensioners.

Pension Credit – £3,900

If you are over the state pension age and struggling financially, you may qualify for Pension Credit to supplement your income. This benefit consists of two components: Guarantee Credit and Savings Credit.

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit aimed at individuals over the state pension age with a low income. It is distinct from your state pension.

To apply for Pension Credit, you can either do so online via GOV.UK (if you are already receiving your state pension and do not have any children or young dependents) or call the Pension Credit claim line at 0800 99 1234, where an operator can assist you with your application over the phone (available Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm).

Housing Benefit – £1,000

Housing Benefit assists with rent payments for those living on a low income.

If you are at least state pension age, you can submit a new claim for Housing Benefit. If you have a partner, both of you must typically reach state pension age before making a new claim.

For couples who have not yet reached state pension age and require assistance with rent, you can only claim Housing Benefit if you reside in supported, sheltered, or temporary housing. Otherwise, you will need to apply for Universal Credit.

Free TV Licence – £174.50

If you are 74 years old or older and you or your partner receive Pension Credit, you can apply for a free TV Licence. This licence will cover everyone residing at the same address.

TV Licensing states: “You may be eligible for a refund on your TV Licence if you will not need it again before it expires, provided there is at least one full month remaining on it.”

If you pay for your licence using a TV Licensing payment card (cash plan), call 0300 555 0286. If you pay via Direct Debit, reach out to 0300 790 0368.

Heating Bills Discount – £150

With gas and electricity prices remaining high this winter, it’s beneficial to check if you qualify for the Warm Home Discount, which offers a £150 reduction on your winter energy bills in England, Scotland, and Wales.

New regulations have broadened the eligibility criteria, so it’s worth investigating if you can access this support.

The Warm Home Discount is a government-supported initiative that provides a £150 discount on your electricity bill during the winter months from October 2025 to March 2026. This discount is applied directly to your electricity bill, and you may also receive a reduction on your gas bill if your supplier offers both services.

Council Tax Discount – £1,600

Pension Credit recipients may also qualify for a reduction in Council Tax, with the specific amount varying based on your local council.

Discounts can range from approximately £300 for a 25% reduction on a typical Band D bill, up to around £1,600 for a complete 100% discount.

Free NHS Prescriptions – £9.90

Individuals are eligible for free prescriptions if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Under 16
  • 16 to 18 and in full-time education
  • 60 or older
  • Pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months with a valid maternity exemption certificate (MatEx)
  • Have a specified medical condition with a valid medical exemption certificate (MedEx)
  • Have a continuing physical disability requiring assistance from another person and hold a valid medical exemption certificate (MedEx)
  • Possess a valid war pension exemption certificate for an accepted disability
  • Are an NHS inpatient

Additionally, individuals with a valid HC2 certificate (for full help with health costs) are also entitled to free prescriptions.

Free Eye Care – Up to £215

If you receive any amount of the Guarantee element of Pension Credit, you are also entitled to NHS assistance with eye care, which includes eye tests and vouchers for glasses or contact lenses.

Free NHS Dental Treatment – Up to £1,000

Pensioners qualifying for the Guarantee element of Pension Credit can access free NHS dental treatment, covering everything from routine check-ups to dentures.

Cold Weather Payment – £25

Cold Weather Payments are automatically issued when temperatures drop to zero degrees Celsius or below for seven consecutive days. Recipients of Pension Credit automatically qualify for these payments, though some households receiving other support, such as Universal Credit and Income Support, may also be eligible if they meet additional criteria.

Pensioners with low incomes can apply for Pension Credit, which averages around £86 a week, also providing access to further support, including assistance with housing costs and free NHS dental treatment.

Royal Mail Redirection Discount – £24

Pension Credit claimants can also benefit from a discount on Royal Mail’s redirection service when moving homes.

This service typically costs £84, but those receiving Pension Credit can save £24 off the total price.

Winter Fuel Payment – Up to £300

The Winter Fuel Payment is an annual payment designed to help with heating expenses during the colder months. You must have reached state pension age to qualify. If your taxable income exceeds £35,000, the Winter Fuel Payment will be reclaimed through the tax system.

Attendance Allowance – Up to £5,740.80

Attendance Allowance is a benefit for individuals over the state pension age who require assistance with personal care or supervision due to an illness or disability. There are two different weekly rates, and the amount you receive depends on the level of support you need.

Any Attendance Allowance you receive does not have to be spent solely on care. Many individuals use the funds for various types of assistance at home or for equipment that helps them maintain independence. For instance, it could help cover bills, meal deliveries, or taxi costs.
