Whitbread has announced that it will cut approximately 3,800 jobs in the UK and Ireland and shutter its remaining Beefeater and Brewers Fayre restaurants, marking a pivotal shift towards becoming a pure hotel business.
The restructuring plan will impact about 12% of Whitbread’s workforce, which totals around 30,000 employees. The company intends to convert all 197 of its remaining branded restaurants into food and drink services integrated with its hotel operations, primarily focusing on its Premier Inn brand.
This strategic pivot follows a review that Whitbread initiated in November, just one year after unveiling its five-year plan. The hospitality sector has faced challenges recently, including rising costs attributed to fiscal changes in the UK, prompting Whitbread to reassess its operational model.
In addition to the job cuts, Whitbread plans to sell and lease back approximately £1.5 billion worth of freehold properties. This financial maneuver aims to reduce net capital expenditure by more than £1 billion over the next five years, as the company seeks to maximize value creation amid fluctuating market conditions.
The Beefeater brand, established in 1974, has long been a staple within Whitbread’s portfolio; however, the company’s recent performance indicators—including flat revenues for the year ending February 26—have necessitated this drastic realignment towards its Premier Inn hotels, which number over 800 across the UK.
The Unite union has expressed concern regarding the manner in which these job cuts were communicated. Union representative Colenzo Jarrett-Thorpe criticized Whitbread for allowing employees to learn about their impending layoffs through media reports rather than direct communication from management.
Dominic Paul, CEO of Whitbread, stated that the company aims to create an integrated food and beverage offer that aligns with guest preferences while unlocking opportunities for additional profitable extension rooms. He acknowledged that rising costs have led to a rigorous evaluation of options available to ensure long-term value creation.
