Aldi, Lidl, and M&S Announce Pay Increases

Aldi, Lidl, and Marks & Spencer (M&S) have unveiled plans to raise hourly wages for their employees starting April 2026. M&S will increase the minimum hourly rate for shop assistants to £13.41, while Aldi’s pay rise will elevate wages for 28,000 shop workers to £13.50 nationwide and £14.88 for those working inside the M25.

Lidl has also made significant adjustments, raising its entry-level pay to £13.45 throughout Britain and £14.80 for employees within the M25. This move reflects a competitive landscape among retailers as they strive to attract and retain staff.

M&S’s pay increase represents a 6.4% raise for approximately 55,000 UK shop floor staff, which is notably double the UK Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate of 3.0% as of January 2026. The company has invested over £350 million in workers’ pay over the past four years, marking a substantial 34% increase in compensation.

Stuart Machin, M&S Chief Executive, emphasized the importance of investing in employees, stating, “Our store colleagues are at the heart of our business, welcoming and serving our customers every day and it is important that we invest in them and their pay.” This sentiment echoes a broader trend among retailers who are increasing wages to help workers navigate challenging financial conditions.

In addition to the pay increases, M&S offers a 20% discount on all M&S branded products and contributes up to 12% towards workers’ pension funds, enhancing the overall benefits package for its employees.

Aldi and Lidl have also been recognized for their competitive pricing strategies. Aldi was recently ranked as the cheapest supermarket in a price comparison study, with Lidl closely following as the second cheapest. Julie Ashfield, Chief Commercial Officer at Aldi UK, remarked, “These findings show that shoppers don’t need to travel abroad to make real savings on their weekly shop.”

As the retail sector evolves, observers will be watching closely to see how these pay adjustments impact employee satisfaction and customer perceptions of these brands. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the long-term effects of these wage increases on overall business performance.
