What Happened
Joy Duncan, a passionate advocate for Cuban culture, has initiated a humanitarian campaign titled “For Da Love O Da Isles” aimed at supporting the Cuban people amid a looming humanitarian crisis. The campaign was launched in Shetland, where Duncan is rallying local support to help those suffering from severe shortages of fuel, medication, and food, exacerbated by a US blockade of oil.
Why It Matters
Duncan’s campaign is a direct response to the dire conditions she witnessed during a recent month-long visit to Cuba. She reported seeing the country descend into deeper economic collapse, with widespread suffering among its population. The lack of essential supplies has severely impacted the island’s infrastructure, leading to electricity shortages and inadequate healthcare. Duncan’s efforts aim to alleviate some of this suffering by collecting humanitarian aid to distribute directly in Cuba.
What’s Next
To facilitate her mission, Duncan plans to load her VW camper van with half a tonne of humanitarian aid and travel to Gatwick before flying to Havana. She is actively appealing for donations from the Shetland community to support her initiative. The campaign not only seeks to provide immediate relief but also aims to raise awareness about the ongoing struggles faced by the Cuban people.
