What Happened
The penultimate station on the Northumberland Line, Northumberland Park Station, was officially opened on February 22nd. The first train arrived shortly after 8:00 AM, marking a significant milestone in the region’s transport infrastructure.
Why It Matters
Northumberland Park Station will facilitate travel to Newcastle in approximately 12 minutes and to Ashington in 23 minutes. The station serves as an interchange with the Tyne and Wear Metro, providing further connectivity options. It features a single platform, shelters, a lift, ticket vending machines, and Pop card readers, which will enable passengers to benefit from the Mayor’s Fares, including a new £2.50 single cap effective from April 1st.
What’s Next
The Northumberland Line, which reopened in December 2024, has already seen over 1,000,000 journeys. The final station, Bedlington, is scheduled to open on March 29th. Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council, emphasized the importance of this project, stating it is a step closer to completing the Northumberland Line, which is deemed nationally significant.
