RFA Lyme Bay Prepared for Possible Deployment
“As part of prudent planning, we have taken the decision to bring RFA Lyme Bay to heightened readiness as a precaution, should she be needed to assist in maritime tasks in the Eastern Mediterranean,” stated a spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence (MOD). This announcement comes amid increasing tensions in the region, prompting the MOD to prepare for various potential scenarios.
RFA Lyme Bay, a Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessel, has been inactive alongside in Gibraltar since completing a maintenance period in December. However, preparations are now underway for its possible deployment, which could involve the evacuation of British nationals from Lebanon, a task for which the ship has a proven track record.
The vessel is equipped to accommodate around 350 troops, with the capacity to increase to approximately 500 if necessary. This flexibility is crucial given the unpredictable nature of the current geopolitical climate. Furthermore, RFA Lyme Bay features a Role 2 medical facility, which includes a ward with 12 beds, an operating theatre, dental surgery, X-ray facilities, and a medical laboratory, making it well-suited for humanitarian missions.
In terms of self-defense, RFA Lyme Bay is armed with two Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWS) and two 30mm cannons. These features enhance its operational capabilities, ensuring the safety of personnel and resources during potential missions.
Historically, RFA Lyme Bay has been deployed for humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts. Notably, it was sent to Dominica in 2015 following Storm Erika, showcasing its ability to respond effectively to crises. The MOD’s current decision to prepare the vessel reflects a commitment to readiness in the face of evolving challenges.
