RFA Lyme Bay Prepared for Deployment
“As part of prudent planning, we have taken the decision to bring RFA Lyme Bay to heightened readiness as a precaution, should she be needed to assist in maritime tasks in the eastern Mediterranean,” stated a spokesman from the Ministry of Defence.
The RFA Lyme Bay is currently being prepared for deployment to the eastern Mediterranean, where it will join HMS Dragon. The latter is expected to take between five and seven days to reach Cyprus from Portsmouth Harbour.
Having been stationed in Gibraltar for approximately three months, RFA Lyme Bay is equipped with medical facilities and a platform for aircraft, enhancing its operational capabilities. The ship, which was commissioned in 2007, measures 580 feet in length and has a displacement of between 8,000 to 8,500 tonnes.
RFA Lyme Bay has the capacity to accommodate around 350 troops, making it a vital asset for delivering troops, vehicles, stores, and ammunition as needed. This deployment comes at a time when the UK government has registered over 100,000 British nationals seeking support amid the ongoing conflict in the region.
Historically, RFA Lyme Bay has played a significant role in humanitarian efforts, including providing disaster relief following Tropical Storm Erika in 2015. Its current mission underscores the ship’s versatility and readiness to respond to various maritime challenges.
As the situation develops, further updates on the deployment and operational details are anticipated. The Ministry of Defence continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that RFA Lyme Bay is ready to fulfill its mission should the need arise.
