What Happened
The Welsh Government has announced the list of events supported by the St David’s Day Fund 2026, which totals £1 million. This fund aims to assist community, regional, and national groups in celebrating Dydd Gwyl Dewi, or St David’s Day, on 1 March. Grants will be awarded to organisations, ranging from £500 for small community groups to £40,000 for larger nationwide events. A total of 92 events are scheduled to take place across Wales from 16 February to 6 March 2026.
Why It Matters
St David’s Day is a significant cultural celebration in Wales, promoting local traditions and community spirit. The initiative encourages participation through various activities, including the return of the social media campaign ‘Random Acts of Welshness’. Residents are urged to engage in small acts of kindness, inspired by St David’s message, “Gwnewch y pethau bychain” or “Do the little things.” Local councils, such as Carmarthenshire, are hosting vibrant events, including cultural performances and food festivals, to foster community involvement.
What’s Next
In addition to local celebrations, Meet In Wales is promoting St David’s Day as part of its efforts to enhance Wales’s international appeal as a business events destination. The upcoming Wales Week in London will celebrate its 10th anniversary, coinciding with St David’s Day, showcasing Welsh culture and fostering connections between Wales and London’s global community. As the date approaches, businesses and local organisations are encouraged to participate in the festivities, enhancing visibility and community engagement.
